There are so many hidden gems in Hokkaido. You can see beautiful scenery e.g.; lakes, mountains, forest, sea and so on. I would like to share some gems in Hokkaido.
Drift Ice (Ryuhyo)
Drift ice along the Okhotsk coast of Hokkaido is a breathtaking natural phenomenon. Every winter, sea ice from the Amur River in Russia drifts southward, eventually reaching the coast of Hokkaido, where it creates stunning landscapes of frozen beauty. This annual occurrence attracts tourists and photographers alike who come to witness the ethereal beauty of the ice formations and the wildlife that inhabit the region. The drift ice season typically lasts from January to March, offering ample opportunities for exploration and appreciation of this unique natural spectacle.
Special Ship for Drift Ice
When drift ice approaches the harbor, conventional ships can’t navigate through it. In Mombetsu City, special ships are available for enjoying the drift ice from the sea. These ships are equipped with a helical drill called the “Archimedean screw,” which operates on the principle that turning the screw advances forward. Mounted on the bow of the vessel, it is rotated to ride up on the ice, and with the addition of the vessel’s weight, it breaks through the ice, enabling navigation through ice-covered areas.
If you are lucky,
If you’re lucky, you might be able to see Steller’s sea eagles. Also, sometimes, Arctic foxes may unwittingly wander onto the drift ice from the land.
